JUNE – FINISHING ONE SEASON, STARTING THE NEW
TIME TO HARVEST...
Pak choi, brassicas (broccoli, cauliflowers etc), silverbeet, spinach, winter lettuces, & leeks as they come ready after planting in late summer/autumn, citrus as it ripens. Tip: no need to pick whole head of broccoli or cauliflower – just take a few florets.
TIME TO PLANT...
Winter’s a good time to plant berryfruits, grapes, feijoas, and all deciduous fruit trees etc to get their root systems well established over winter ready for strong Spring growth. Plant with Real Blood & Bone to maximise this root development. Good range of fruiting varieties now in stock, with more arriving regularly. The range will increase steadily from the end of June onwards with the range being complete by mid July.
Red lettuces + winter lettuces (Imperial Triumph & Drunken Woman perform well in colder temperatures), pak choi which suits the cold, and is ready quickly, fruit trees as available, citrus.
Plant Garlic at this time of year ready for summer harvest. Printanor, spicy Creole, and Elephant Garlic. If possible try not to plant garlic in the same place each year. Good supply of Shallots at the moment. Garlic loves lots of compost and then side dressings of animal manure. In summer the watering needs to be regular to keep the bulbs succulent, particularly from Christmas on when the drier period starts.

Chosen for consistent performance in the garden. Broad beans produce bountiful yields of long pods containing flavoursome, flattened beans. A delicious and easy vegetable to grow in the home garden.
After Harvest: Ideal as a hot garnish or vegetable and for salads.
Position: Full sun.
Planting: 15-20cm apart.
Maturity: 12-16 weeks.

Bring colour into your vegetable garden. Hughey produces gorgeous crimson flowers and produces tasty beans that stay green when cooked. As this is a tall variety it will benefit from support.
After Harvest: Ideal as a hot garnish or vegetable and for salads.
Position: Full sun.
Planting: 15 apart.
Maturity: 16-20 weeks.
TIME TO SOW...
Broad beans, pak choi, garlic, kale miner’s lettuce, mustard greens, onions, peas, shallots, silverbeet, spinach, brassicas (use cloches to speed up growth), & winter lettuces. Be aware of slower germination in colder temperatures. Garlic has relatively shallow root systems so keep an eye on watering, and weed regularly to eliminate competition for fert etc.
TIME TO FEED...
A sprinkle of dried blood works wonders around brassicas, esp broccoli, encouraging larger heads and more side shoots. Use Yates Thrive on any new plantings to get them started.

TIME TO PROTECT...
Use plastic-covered cloches to protect new seedlings from both hard frosts and birds, use frost cloth on citrus etc. Use cold frames for good protection of seedlings & plants from frost, with the clear tops acting like a mini greenhouse, letting the sun in through the day & protecting in the cold nights. Put a layer of slow-decomposing leaves in the bottom of the cold frame. As they break down slowly they release a small amount of heat, adding to the overall warmth. Use frost cloth to protect citrus and hydrangeas in heavy frost areas. Protect newly planted lettuces, brassicas, etc from slugs & snails.
Use cloches to protect the more tender plants and to protect new plantings of lettuce etc from marauding birds.
TIME TO CONTROL...
Got empty spaces in the garden waiting for Spring planting? Spread peastraw across them to suppress weeds, encourage earthworms, and improve soil texture as the straw breaks down. New stocks in store again.
Carrots, and potatoes can be badly affected by wire worm. Rest the garden bed and sow mustard as a winter green crop. — Green crops can still be planted as the temperatures are remaining mild for germination — blue lupins, mustard, and a triple combo of those two plus garden barley. Dig in the mustrard green crop in during early spring just before flowering, to release a biofumigant to deal to wireworms.
Spray fruit trees with Enspray 99 Oil and FreeFlo Copper to clean up any residual insect and fungal problems on both roses and fruit trees. These two used to be mixed together but the new theory is that they are much more effective used a week apart. Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil is refined to 99%, eliminating the risk of burning. Grosafe Organic FreeFlow Copper Hydroxide also has very small particle size giving better coverage on the leaf surface, better adherence, easier mixing, and continuously releasing copper ions.
Free Flo Copper Fungicide - 100g, 200g
An organic copper hydroxide that controls a wide range of fungal and bacterial diseases on fruit, vegetables and ornamentals.
Superior efficacy and rain fastness due to fine particle size. Superior bio-availability giving better protection from fungal and bacterial pathogens.
Reduced elemental copper application means better environmental protection.
Quality formulation resulting in problem free handling, mixing and application. Certified input for Organics with no withholding period.
EnSpray 99® Spraying Oil - 200ml, 500ml
An emulisfiable, narrow range spray oil for the control of scale, thrips, aphidsmites and powdery mildew.
EnSpray 99® inhibits eggs, nymphs and adult insects and mites breathing resulting in suffocation. This mode of action is through direct contact. EnSpray 99® can also affect feeding and egg laying activity by interfering with a pest’s ability to detect host plants.
EnSpray 99® protects the plant from feeding damage and reduces the population density. Oil has been found to affect the feeding and egg-laying behaviour of thrips and mites
TIME TO PRUNE...

Burnet's Green Feed Lupins
Nitrogen fixing Blue Lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) are very important for the maintenance of your soil fertility, recycling lost nutrients from your subsoil coupled with adding vast amounts of “free Nitrogen” which is available to your next crop.
Good for use on Vegetable Gardens, Flower Beds and New Sections
Using the plant life to replace lost nutrients in the soil, encourages earthworms and other beneficial micro-organisms to your garden, thus putting life back into any exhausted/virgin soils. These seeds are not pasteurised.
TIME TO PRUNE...
Cut summer-fruiting raspberries, boysenberries etc, leaving the strongest canes for next season’s fruiting. Autumn-fruiting raspberries can be cut to the ground in winter.
