JUNE - THE NEW SEASON BECKONS

TIME TO PLANT...

Winter colour flowering varieties in punnets will come into flower more slowly in the colder months so if you want instant look colour the best bet is the big range of Super Six Flowering & Flora Viva flowering singles. New season’s roses arrive in June and can be planted from now on, having mixed good quality compost into the soil. Tramp the soil down firmly after planting to ‘anchor’ the roots. Standard roses should be staked right up into the head of the plant to prevent snapping. Rose fertiliser should only used on the soil surface, not placed near the roots at planting time. Plant hellebores (winter roses) as they come onstream, shrubs for easy establishment in winter, new season’s camellias.

Plant lily bulbs! Heads Up! We’re expecting Lily Bulbs in the last week of June – Christmas Lilies, Asiatics, and Orientals coming. Lilies love a really sunny position with well-composted, well-drained soil. And of course they’re brilliant for picking with a very good vase life

TIME TO FEED...

A pinch of dried blood around polyanthus/primroses, pansies, & primulas will intensify flower colour and quantity of flowers.

Feeding the birds is one of the most rewarding parts of winter and much appreciated by our feathered friends in a long cold (and possibly wet) winter. We have a good supply of all bird food options, plus bird feeders. Check out our great $$-saving offers on bird foods.

TIME TO PROTECT...

Look after the Geraniums! I hate waste and as we get very hard frosts at home I’ve put the geraniums in plastic pots in a sheltered spot by the back door ready to plant them out again next spring.

Hydrangeas from severe frosts (mild/medium frosts are fine), flowering annuals from slugs & snails.

Winter Spraying – Spray both roses and fruit trees with Enspray 99 Oil and FreeFlo Copper to clean up any residual insect and fungal problems on both roses and fruit trees. These two used to be mixed together but the new theory is that they are much more effective used a week apart.
Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil is refined to 99%, eliminating the risk of burning. Grosafe Organic FreeFlow Copper Hydroxide also has very small particle size giving better coverage on the leaf surface, better adherence, easier mixing, and continuously releasing copper ions.

TIME TO CONTROL...

Weeds while they’re slow growing, using a hoe if the soil is dryish, or directly pulling them out. Leave the weeds on the surface to dry and break down into the soil. Spraying with weedkiller is fine on paths/drives, but on garden beds be aware of the delicate microbes & mycorrhizal fungi living symbiotically in the root zone -hoeing or pulling them out is preferable.

EnSpray 99® Spraying Oil - 200ml, 500ml

An emulisfiable, narrow range spray oil for the control of scale, thrips, aphidsmites and powdery mildew.

EnSpray 99® inhibits eggs, nymphs and adult insects and mites breathing resulting in suffocation. This mode of action is through direct contact. EnSpray 99® can also affect feeding and egg laying activity by interfering with a pest’s ability to detect host plants.

EnSpray 99® protects the plant from feeding damage and reduces the population density. Oil has been found to affect the feeding and egg-laying behaviour of thrips and mites.

TIME TO PRUNE...

Main job at home right now? Cutting back deciduous shrubs and trees, and cutting to the ground all perennials that die right back in Winter. Then a quick skim across the soil with a hoe to deal to weeds and, hey presto, the garden looks respectable again.

June is too early to prune roses unless you’re heading away and have to get them done – August 15 is the very last date for pruning before the new growth starts shooting out.

— Or not! Delay rose pruning until July if possible to avoid frost damage to new shoots. Don’t prune lavender or hedges in colder months to avoid dieback from frost damage. Don’t trim hedges in Winter to avoid frost damage on newly cut foliage.
