A slowly spreading, mat-forming, evergreen perennial to about 10cm high, with small, hairy, grey-green leaves. Red-purple and blue-purple, four-petalled flowers are produced in short spikes from mid-spring to early summer.
Flowers are cruciform in shape and in the wild form come in a purple shade and make a colourful carpet in all types of soil.
